Domsea Donaldson Steelhead

Domsea Steelhead
Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) Domesticated Salmonid Seedstock

Superior Performance
The Domsea® Donaldson steelhead is bred for low egg mortality and high farm productivity. The survival rate from fertilization to eye-up is normally 90%, with another 90% surviving to hatch. The Donaldson strain has also been bred for high growth rates. During the first year, at a water temperature of 10°C (50°F), the broodstock doubled their weight every month. The growth rates are very uniform, and little grading is required. This strain of Donaldson performs well on regular trout diets.

Superior Broodstock
The Domsea strain of Donaldson, originally from Washington State, was farmed and bred in Finland and Sweden for high productivity under commercial conditions. The stock has had a SPF status for decades. At the Domsea facility, the broodstock is kept in freshwater isolation and quarantine. The average weight of the 3-4 year old first time spawners is 15 lbs.

Donaldson steelhead is well received in the seafood market. In the United States several thousand metric tons of fresh steelhead / sea trout is imported annually from Chile and Canada. In continental Europe, sea trout has become extremely popular among the smoking operations that produce specialty products such as lox and gravlox. These smokehouses prefer sea trout to Atlantic salmon because of its competitive price and intrinsic qualities.

The steelhead / sea trout possesses a number of attributes ideal for the production of quality lox. The hybrid's small head and high meat-to-bone ratio yields a fillet of at least 5 percent more weight than a similar-sized Atlantic salmon. Similarly, the Donaldson produces a relatively wide fillet for its weight due to its short and deep body form. This is a positive factor for the lox producers since the relatively small fillet can be cost effective for a pre-sliced product. In addition, the salmon trout differs from the Atlantic salmon in its lower accumulation of lipids in the muscle tissue, which gives a firmer smoked product with a higher yield during the slicing process.
