The Development of Domsea Donaldson Steelhead (History)

Dr. Lauren Donaldson bred the Donaldson steelhead at the University of Washington in the 1930's to please both the aquaculturist and the seafood connoisseur. Eyed eggs were initially shipped from the University of Washington to Norway and Sweden in the early 1960's. The hybrid was commercialized in Scandinavia and raised in ocean net pens. The most productive of the strains in Finland and Sweden provided the basis for the Domsea Donaldson steelhead to which AquaSeed now applies Domsea's proven family based breeding program. This industry now produces more than 100,000 metric tons of large Donaldson steelhead annually.
