Conservation

Pacific salmon populations have declined to such low levels in the Northwest region of the United States that the species was recently placed under the protection of the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA), which will require a comprehensive recovery effort. Before implementing any recovery effort, the salmon population at risk must be preserved.

AquaSeed has perfected Captive Broodstock Technologies for both wild and domesticated Pacific salmons, and can show an impressive record of breeding improvements, genetic isolation, survival rates, and health management of captive broodstocks. AquaSeed maintains an isolation and breeding facility at its Domsea Broodstock operation, where 40 distinct families of Pacific coho have been maintained for almost 20 years or the equivalent of 15 generations.

AquaSeed assists in conserving endangered Pacific salmon stocks by applying Safety-Net Programs to prevent extinction of some of the salmon stocks in the Pacific Northwest. Based on its extensive experience with domesticated and captive broodstock of Pacific salmon, AquaSeed currently maintains facilities of ESA listed chinook salmon from the Columbia River.

Applying Safety-Net Programs to Endangered and Threatened Salmon AquaSeed draws on the 20-year experience of its affiliate Domsea Broodstock and thus provides the full range of services necessary to secure captive broodstocks of Pacific salmon listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). These services include:

  • Safety-Net Program
  • Site selection
  • Permit applications
  • Design of captive broodstock genetic matrix
  • Budgeting and cost estimates
  • Facility design
  • Construction management
  • Operational planning
  • Quality control and health management planning
  • Design, construction, and management of temporary facilities for emergency captive broodstock
  • Maintenance of isolated facilities for broodstock biosecurity
  • Multi-family and multi-generational identification, separation, and control
  • Long term captive broodstock facility management
